Why Setting Sales Goals is Important

Harvard MBA program, 1979

A study was conducted on students in the 1979 Harvard MBA program. The students were asked, “Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?”

Only three percent of the graduates had written goals and plans.

13 percent had set goals, but they were not in writing.

84 percent had no specific goals at all.

 

Why Setting Sales Goals is Important (part 2)

 

Ten years later, the members of the class were interviewed again, and these were the findings:

The 13 percent of the class who had set goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent who had not set goals at all.

And the three percent who had clear, written goals… They were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together.

 

 

What Sales Goal Setting Means for a Salesman

 

In the United States only 10% of Sales People properly set sales goals.

Those 10% account for 73% of the Sales Volume and 78% of the Commissions Paid.

97% report that they are highly satisfied with their life.

The 90% that don’t set sales goals properly account for only 27% of the Sales and 22% of the Commissions.

Because setting goals is your single biggest advantage in success and excellence.

How to Set Sales Goals

It must be reasonable… but what isn’t?

It must be measurable.

It must be written down, in the present tense

It must be reviewed often.

You must know the reasons for wanting to achieve it.

You must celebrate when you reach it.

 

How Much Time Does it Take To Set Sales Goals?

One day a year

4 hours a month

1 hour a week

10 minutes a day

 

-If it sounds like too much effort, you can always be average.  That’s what most people do, so you’ll have plenty of company.

 

If it doesn’t, then you can have the extraordinary.
